Matt Cardle is stepping back into the spotlight! The British singer-songwriter – who shot to fame after winning The X Factor in 2010 – has announced his first full-length studio album in seven years, ‘The Great Escape’, set for release on April 10th, 2026. The news arrives alongside the project’s lead single, ‘Drinking Dreams’ – a soaring, emotionally charged track that previews a new chapter for one of the UK’s most distinctive pop voices.
Described as Matt’s most expansive and self-assured work to date, the LP brings together a heavyweight roster of creative collaborators. Across its 15 tracks, Cardle worked with writers and producers whose résumés include work for Ellie Goulding, Kylie Minogue, London Grammar, Sam Ryder, Wet Leg, Adele, and more – signalling a record that leans confidently into modern pop, soul, and timeless indie-rock balladry.
Commenting on the record, the ‘When We Collide’ singer says: “I took a long hiatus from releasing music, feeling the need to reconnect with a feeling inside that I had lost. ‘The Great Escape’ is a body of work over a decade in the making.”

“I’ve drawn on years of highs and lows, and love and loss – and at times, needing to escape life and myself all together. I’ve poured all that emotion into this album.”
Lead single ‘Drinking Dreams’ with its raw vocals and atmospheric production, sets the emotional tone – a blend of introspection and uplift that hints at the broader arc of the album. “This song tells a story of two lovers taking a swim in the deep green sea of psychedelics, elevating them from reality to dreams and back again.”

After years exploring musical theatre, navigating personal growth, and recalibrating out of the public eye, ‘The Great Escape’ is positioned as a reflective but forward-driving statement from an artist rebuilding on his own terms. The new material channels the grit and vulnerability that first made Matt a fan favourite, but with a renewed maturity and sonic ambition.
This confident, fully grown collection sits comfortably alongside Cardle’s biggest hits, its modern production adding alt-pop flourishes and sweeping string arrangements that let his vocals take centre stage. Lyrically, the record leans into universal emotion viewed through the lens of experience – shifting between heartbreak, vulnerability, the quiet strength of self-love, and a hopeful gaze toward what’s ahead.
