Cardi B isn’t easing her way into her long-awaited sophomore era—she’s coming for hip-hop’s crown with a swagger-heavy new single, “Imaginary Playerz.” Released August 15, the track flips Jay-Z’s 1997 cut “Imaginary Players” into a Cardi-sized flex, setting the tone for her upcoming album Am I The Drama?, due September 19.

Built on Jay-Z’s sample and produced by DJ SwanQo, Sean Island, and OctaneThisThatGas, “Imaginary Playerz” is Cardi B at her sharpest: punchline-driven, brash and funny in the way only she can be. “My flop and your flop is not the same/ If you did my numbers, y’all would pop champagne/ If I did your numbers, I would hop out a plane,” she sneers, before stacking more bars that position her not just as rap’s reigning chart-crasher, but as someone who knows she doesn’t even belong in the same league as her doubters.

Where Jay-Z’s original skewered wannabes, Cardi B uses the canvas to reassert her dominance over a rap world still waiting for her follow-up to 2018’s Invasion of Privacy.

The Bronx star has said she wouldn’t have released the track without Jay-Z’s blessing—a nod that underscores both her respect for hip-hop lineage and her own standing within it. “If he didn’t approve it, I probably wouldn’t even feel a certain type of way neither, because it’s like, ‘OK, maybe I just had to come a little bit harder,’” she admitted on X Spaces. Instead, Hov’s stamp of approval makes this a generational handoff moment: Cardi putting her spin on a classic and proving she can hold her own with the icons she grew up idolizing.

The accompanying video, co-directed by Cardi B and Patientce Foster, is pure spectacle. She struts across an airport tarmac like it’s a couture runway, slips into red ballgowns, boards private jets, dines oceanside on lobster, and caps it all off in Parisian couture. The visual is less about subtle storytelling than about image—Cardi B reveling in excess, reframing luxury as survival and success for a woman who once danced in clubs to pay her bills.

“Imaginary Playerz” is the second taste of Am I The Drama?, following “Outside,” and it positions the record as both unapologetically hip-hop and unafraid of maximalist pop culture spectacle. With a 23-track sprawl promised, Cardi B seems ready to make good on the five-year gap between albums with something loud, bold, and impossible to ignore.

If this single is any indicator, Am I The Drama? isn’t just Cardi’s comeback—it’s her declaration that she never really left.
